Tutorial 1 of 6
Your first deck in five minutes
Beginner 5 min
Write a short talk in Markdown, watch the slides appear next to it, pick a theme and download the PDF.
Deckwright turns plain text into slides. You write on the left, the preview on the right shows the real slide — exactly as it will look in the PDF. Everything stays in your browser.
Start an empty deck
- Open the File menu and choose New deck.
- The editor on the left, Deck in Markdown, now holds a short starter deck. Select all of it and delete it.
Write three slides
Type this into the editor:
---
title: Book club
lang: en
---
# Book club
Our plan for spring
---
## This month
- Read chapters 1 to 6
- Bring one question
---
## Next meeting
Thursday at 7 pm in the library
The part between the first two --- lines is the front matter: the deck title and its language. After that, every line with three dashes starts a new slide. # makes a title slide, ## makes the title of a normal slide, - makes bullets.
The preview follows your cursor: click into the text of the second slide and the preview shows slide 2. Use the arrows above the preview, Previous slide and Next slide, or the keys [ and ] to page through.
Pick a theme and a shape
In the toolbar, open the Theme list and try Midnight, Harbor or High contrast. The front matter gets a line theme: … — the theme is part of your text, so it travels with the file. The Slide shape list switches between Widescreen 16:9 and Standard 4:3.
All themes are checked against the WCAG contrast rules, so you can pick on taste.
Download
Press Download PDF at the right of the toolbar (or Ctrl+E). The PDF has real, selectable text and the fonts are embedded, so it looks the same on every computer.
Your deck is saved in this browser while you type; the toolbar shows Saved in this browser. To keep a copy elsewhere, use File → Save project file.
Next steps
- The Insert menu adds charts, diagrams, tables, images and speaker notes.
- Present → Present from the start (or
F5) shows the deck full screen. - The Check view lists accessibility problems before you share the deck.
